Notice Regarding Appointment of Magistrate

            The magistrate appointing commission for Franklin County will meet at the Courthouse on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. for the purpose of appointing a magistrate for the term beginning on or around June 11, 2024, and ending July 31, 2025.

            Magistrate appointments, jurisdiction, and procedures are specified in Iowa Code sections 602.6403 through 602.6405.  Please note the following:

  1. A magistrate shall be a resident of the county of appointment or of a county contiguous to the county of appointment during the magistrate’s term of office.
  2. A person is not qualified for appointment as a magistrate if at the time of appointment the person has reached age seventy-two.
  3. A magistrate shall be an attorney licensed to practice law in this state.
  4. To qualify for appointment, applicants must file an application approved by the Supreme Court. The application form may be obtained from the Franklin County Clerk of Court.  Completed application materials must be received by the Franklin County Clerk of Court not later than May 17, 2024, at 4:00 PM.
  5. The present salary for a part-time Judicial Magistrate is $43,318.00 per year. Benefits are available at part-time rates.
  6. The Magistrate shall work in other counties of the district when necessary as assigned by the Chief Judge.
  7. The person appointed shall attend the annual school of instruction for Magistrates.
