Concealed Weapons Permits (Permit to Carry)

As of January 1, 2011, there was a change in the way that the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office to issues Concealed Weapons Permits. The following information is a guide for existing and new request permit holders wanting to obtain the new permits. This information should help you thru the process.

Larry Richtsmeier,
Franklin County Sheriff

Current Franklin County weapon permit holders have three ways in which to renew a permit from the Sheriff:

  1. Take any training course offered by a National Rifle Association or Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certified weapon instructor, then apply for your permit (with proof of training) up to but not sooner than 30 days before your current permit expires. The cost of your permit will be $25.00 and your permit will be good for a period of 5 year

    OR

  2. Qualify on a firing range under the supervision of an instructor certified by the NRA, ILEA, or similar certifying body. Then apply for your permit (with proof of qualification) up to but not sooner than 30 days before your current permit expires. The cost of your permit will be $25.00 and your permit will be good for a period of 5 years

    OR

  3. Take no training class and apply for your permit at the expiration of your current permit.  You will need to provide the sheriff with a copy of any training you have received in the past that meets the requirements of a “new” permit (if you took a class from our department we will refer back to that). You will then receive a permit at the cost of $50.00 and your permit will be good for a period of 5 years.

To simplify: Current permit holders who take a class or qualify will pay $25.00 for their next permit and current permit holders who do not take a class or qualify and can provide documentation of training in the past will pay $50.00 (The cost difference is mandated by the new bill NOT by the Sheriff)
